Meet Texas coach: Sydney Greene

We sat down with our College Success Coach, Sydney Greene, to talk about her art and the inspirations behind it. Check out her work here.

Q: What was your pathway to College Forward?

I was doing freelance art and working at a coffee shop when I learned about AmeriCorps. I wanted to know more about the “nonprofit world” before I made a decision about which graduate school program to apply for. College Forward resonated with me because of its’ mission to serve first-generation college students.

Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a coach?

The most rewarding aspect of being a coach is getting to make connections with my students and watch them grow.

Q: What do you do in your free time?

In the free time that I have, I enjoy painting, working out, catching up on my Netflix queue, and cooking.

Q: How old were you when you began your art journey, and what sparked your interest in it?

I have always been interested in illustration since watching cartoons as a kid. I became interested in painting when I was in elementary school. My art teacher let me know that I was talented and it greatly enhanced my confidence. I visited museums and became more familiar with famous artists. Throughout my life, art has slowly become a large part of my experience

Q: Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

In general, my parents inspire me to be the best version of myself and to have confidence. They inspire me to stay grounded and to set realistic goals for myself while still chasing my dreams. I don’t think I can put into words how meaningful their presence in my life is.

Q: What is your medium of choice?

Watercolors are my favorite medium right now. I like the detail that I’m able to accomplish with watercolor and the right brushes. It’s exciting to watch the painting come together and to learn different techniques. I also like using Photoshop to create digital paintings, this is my most used medium.

Q: What is next for you?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to teach more art lessons and art therapy sessions while hosting art-focused events that raise money for public health initiatives. I would also like to enter a Public Health graduate program so that I can network with health professionals who are doing this on a larger scale.
